Save Our Tidepools! Become a Tidepool Docent but what's a Docent?
When I first heard about this I said "this is very cool, saving the tidepools I'm all for it!" But then I said is "what the heck is a docent?" So here is what I found out...Docents are educators, trained to further the public's understanding of the cultural and historical collections of the institution. In many cases, docents, in addition to their prescribed function as guides, also conduct research utilizing the institution's facilities. They are normally volunteers as is the case here in Dana Point.
So here's your chance to learn, teach others and help save our tidepools.
The Dana Point Tidepool Interpretive program will provide an interpretive education program for all visitors to the rocky intertidal areas of the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area. This Ocean Institute program is sponsered by the City of Dana Point and they are actively seeking new voulnteers!
The goal of the TIP is to provide education to the general public and inform visitors of the organisms, ecology and necessary protection of the valuable tidepool resources.
The inital training will be conducted at the Ocean Institute on february 23rd, 2009 where new volunteers will learn the basics of tidepool ecology, conservation, and program logistics. A second training will be conducted in the field with the City of Dana Point's Natural Resources Protection Officer that will address further program logistics, safety in the intertidal zone, teaching techniques and approaching the public in a friendly professional manner.
