Dana Point Boat Parade of Lights starts its 34th annual run
Dana Point Harbor's Boat Parade of lights kicked off Friday night with nearly 100 boaters showing off their lighting know-how during this year's "Santa's Sealife" theme. This year is also a chance for new boats to shine, with more newcomers than veterans in the 34th annual parade.
If you missed the festivities in Dana Point, you are in luck. The parade will continue this weekend on . December 12th and 13th at 7:30 p.m. Free valet parking in front of the Wind and Sea and El Torito restaurants will be made available to the public.
This year's parade is a bit different from previous ones, according to Dana Point Harbor spokeswoman Kim Tilly."This year we have more new people in the parade than returning participants," Tilly said. "It is fantastic and will make for a fun time."
You can watch the Dana Point parade for free anywhere in the harbor as boats vie for decorating awards, including prizes for motivation. Most of the prizes don't involve money - just bragging rights. But they don't always go to the most ornate boat.
"Sponsors may pick someone to win who had great kids or great participation. It's not always about the biggest, brightest or baddest boat out there. It is more about the spirit of the event," Tilly said.
The Dana Point Harbor Boaters Association is a new sponsor this year and will be giving out the Spirit Cup in recognition of the boat demonstrating the most spirit.
